When a YouTube video does not have a transcript available to you, first check whether the video itself is accessible and contains audible speech. If it is a supported public recording of up to 90 minutes that you have permission to process, you can try the speech transcription workflow in Damas. A missing transcript on YouTube and a failed Damas request are separate observations; neither establishes the cause of the other or guarantees a usable result.
Identify what is missing before submitting the link
Open the original video and listen to the passage you need. Keep its link and title in your working note. Record only what you can observe, without guessing why YouTube does not show text.
| What you observe | What to do next |
|---|---|
| The video plays with clear speech, but you cannot find a transcript | Check source eligibility, then consider a Damas transcription request. Do not describe the unavailable YouTube text as a Damas error. |
| The recording is private, restricted, live or inaccessible | Stop this workflow. Damas cannot bypass those source restrictions. |
| The passage contains only music and written information | Read the visual information yourself within your permissions. Speech transcription does not establish extraction of writing from the image. |
| Speech is present but a crucial word cannot be heard | Keep that word unresolved. A generated sentence cannot verify audio you cannot check. |
These are manual decisions, not an automatic diagnostic feature. The published product facts do not establish why a particular YouTube transcript is absent or whether a particular link will process successfully. There is no verified YouTube menu repair procedure in this guide.
Try the supported speech workflow
Damas accepts supported public, on-demand YouTube, Instagram and X video links up to 90 minutes. On iPhone, it requires iOS 18.6 or later, internet, Premium and consent for AI processing. Only submit material you are authorized to process. A video you can watch in your account may still be inaccessible for processing.
- Check the original link, duration and public, on-demand availability. Retain the link rather than downloading or uploading a video file.
- Provide the supported link in Damas. Follow the current app instructions for transcription and review the AI consent.
- Use original-language transcription when you need the actual speech. Translation produces text in another language; a built-in summary gives a shorter overview.
- Wait for the request to finish. Processing time and results vary with the source, audio and connection; no completion time is guaranteed.
- If text is returned, replay the passage and check names, numbers, negatives and conditions before editing and copying it.
If the request fails, check the link, source access, duration, internet and the requirements shown in the app. Record the actual message for your own troubleshooting. Do not conclude that missing YouTube captions caused the failure, repeatedly submit an unchanged inaccessible source, or try to bypass access restrictions. Use another eligible source if the original remains unavailable.
Worked example: a lecture with an unspoken diagram
This is a fictional teaching example, not a test of a real video or a quotation. Imagine a public lecture plays normally, but you cannot find a transcript. The speaker explains a comparison aloud and points to a diagram without reading its labels.
- Before processing: note that speech is audible and the YouTube transcript is unavailable to you. Do not infer that the source has no speech or that Damas will definitely succeed.
- After a successful request: compare the spoken explanation with the generated text. Keep the checked explanation as a paraphrase.
- Visual gap: inspect the diagram yourself and label those notes as information read on screen. Do not insert its labels into a quotation from the speaker.
- Unclear label: leave it pending if you cannot read it. Neither a summary nor another LLM can supply verified missing evidence.
The useful result may be a partial checked note. You do not need to turn an incomplete source into a seemingly complete transcript.
Copy a result with its check status
Use this manual checklist: original link and title; passage needed; source access checked; text returned or request unresolved; speech checked against audio; visual information kept separate; remaining unclear words. A request that completed is not the same as a transcript that you have checked. Preserve that distinction when copying notes elsewhere.
No external LLM is needed. If you optionally use another LLM to organize authorized copied text, label it as an external drafting step and check every result; it is not a Damas integration or a way to recover inaccessible speech. Never invent facts, quotations, owners or deadlines.
For the regular app flow, see video link transcription. The speech and caption guide explains how to keep visual text separate, using a public Reel as its example. Before using exact wording, follow quotation checking. Damas provides editable, copyable speech text for this review.
Damas does not download media, accept file uploads, dub audio, embed subtitles or process offline. Premium does not guarantee access or accuracy. If the original becomes inaccessible, leave unfinished checks unresolved and reuse text only within your rights.
